The Herdsman stands in a Hamlet where tradition is the wealth of the community, famous battles, the legacy of the Scots & being famously known for its beef production. Just a stone's throw away The Battle of The Standard ceased, where the English armies defeated the Scots at nearby Cowton Moor in 1138
The fields behind Holywell lane are said to be the burial grounds for the Scottish, known locally as the “The Scotch Graves”. The footpath named Cramble Cross is thought to derive from a cross marking the last stand of the Scottish soldiers, where today the sound of horses and the feeling of unsettledness can still be heard and experienced.
The Cowtons have a wealth of history, tradition and beautiful countryside, just waiting to be discovered. There are many public footpaths & bridleways, and the area is famed for the many hacking routes around the Cowtons. We have a great passion for the great Yorkshire countryside, with this, we provide a safe area for horse parking, with purpose-built stables, and a safe haven for all furry friends.
Our terrace area is perfect for the ultimate country village destination, with a children's play area and decked terrace area to enjoy.
A visit to The Herdsman is not just a dining a experience, it’s a visit of tradition & culture.
